Ballerina Flat A flat enclosed shoe, resembling a ballet slipper.
Boot An enclosed shoe that covers the entire foot and finishes at the anklebone or above.
Bootie A shoe that looks like a boot but ends under the anklebone. Sometimes referred to as a ‘shoot’ or ‘shootie’.
Clog A closed toe shoe with an open back and a platform sole
D'Orsay A version of a pump that has one or both sides cut away, exposing the arch of the foot.
Espadrille A shoe or sandal with a sole covered by braided rope. Often seen on wedges.
Jelly Shoes Shoes made of rubber (usually PVC), often in sheer bright colours.
Kitten Heel These shoes have a low, slender heel that is set forward on the sole.
Loafer A flat, slip-on shoe without shoelaces or buckles.
Mary Jane Enclosed shoes with a low heel and strap across the instep. Black patent leather is considered the ‘classic’ look.
Mule A heeled shoe with a closed toe, open back and no strap.
Peep toe A peep toe shoe has an opening at the end that shows part of the toes, but not the whole toe line, as other open-toed shoes do.
Platform Shoe A shoe with a thick sole under the front part of the foot. They can have a high heel or the sole can be flat (in which case the thick sole runs the entire length of the shoe).
Pump The classic work shoe. A heeled shoe of any height which is totally enclosed. Peep-toe shoes can sometimes still be classified as a pump.
Sandal These have an open toe and open back, with straps across the foot.
Slide A slip-in shoe, totally backless with an open or closed toe. Technically a closed toe slide becomes a ‘mule’.
Sling-back An open back shoe with a strap that wraps around the upper heel.
Stacked Heel A heel that looks like stacks of wood, but is actually made of leather or leather-like covering that just gives that appearance.
Stiletto A very high, slim and tapered heel. Every Princess needs one!
Thong A sandal with a strap that runs between the first two toes. They can be open back (like the traditional Aussie thongs) or have straps that secure around the ankle.
